The State of North Dakota is working together with health care providers and community partners to improve the health and well-being of refugees and newcomers, recognizing the unique challenges they face as they build their lives in a new community. The holistic approach aims to empower refugees and newcomers by equipping them with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed health decisions.

Refugee Mental Health Initiative
Recognizing the myriad of pre-migration and post-resettlement stressors and the impact of displacement and trauma on emotional well-being, the Refugee Behavioral Health Program provides supportive and culturally sensitive services to refugees and newcomers. Through collaborative efforts with health professionals, cultural liaisons, and community organizations, the program aims to reduce stigma, increase access to care, and empower individuals to navigate and overcome the emotional challenges of their unique circumstances.

- Behavioral Health Literacy:
- Focuses on improving the understanding and awareness of behavioral health and emotional wellness to decrease stigma about, and increase access to behavioral health services.
- Coordinating behavioral health care:
- Serves as a bridge between different elements of the healthcare system, promoting a seamless and integrated approach to behavioral health care. The program also prioritizes providing cultural humility training for service providers.
- Wellness and Adjustment groups:
- Provides a safe space to share experiences, learn from each other, and acquire practical skills for navigating life transitions.
