Children do best with foster families from their own culture. Nearly 5% of North Dakota's population is Native American, while nearly 40% of North Dakota children in foster care identify as Native American. Identifying and licensing foster families of Native American heritage can offer the child a chance to remain a part of the community where they continue to learn about their cultural history. In North Dakota, four Tribal Nations license foster homes within their defined tribal jurisdiction.
